Since giving up my gym membership a while ago, I’ve begun to think outside of the box where my fitness and exercise is concerned and working out at home with DVDs has been fantastic! I’m far more flexible with my workouts than I used to be and enjoy that I now feel comfortable to change my planned workout if I’m not feeling it that day without any guilt. Now I take the ‘something is better than nothing‘ approach and I’m a firm believer in .
Honestly, I don’t have as much time to workout as I used to and I’m tired of stressing over it because it takes the fun factor out of exercise for me. Recently, I’ve been in a bit of a workout funk, but now I have a routine in place that I think that is going to help me raise my game. Having a plan in place always works better for me, but I also like to have that flexibility in my routine too. I’m aiming to workout 3-4 times a week that will include a collection of short workouts centred around yoga, strength and running.
When looking to change-up my home workouts there are many options available and one of my favourite ways is to look to the variety of workout DVDs on the market. Sure, some are better than others, but I have been recently reminded after taking up the 30 Day Shred again that some are kick-ass good! Workout DVDs are fantastic because whether you’re a full-time mum, student, working, or all three, we all lead busy lifestyles and sometimes just don’t have the time to get to the gym. DVDs offer a kind of support that allows you to squeeze in a little something when you can at your own convenience in your own home.
Here are some of the things that I consider when choosing a new workout DVD to ensure that I get the best home workout possible and reap all the benefits:
CONNECTING WITH THE PRESENTERS PERSONALITY
Using a workout DVD is like having a personal trainer in your very own home, so for me making sure that I connect with the personality of the instructor is very important. Basically, the instructor has to have an awesome personality for me to actually enjoy the workout as we are going to be spending a lot of quality time together, so that time has to be fun! A workout DVD with a boring instructor is never a good thing and just results in the DVD being sent to the back of the DVD collection, or worst case scenario being resold on eBay.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING TO ACHIEVE?
There are so many different types of workout DVDs from strength training, dance, yoga, Pilates, martial arts and aerobics. When choosing what type of workout DVD I want to buy I always ask the same question: what is it that I want to achieve? Right now I’m working on toning and strength, trying to be as strong and healthy as I can be but under more gentle and relaxed conditions. Although sometimes I just want to have fun and fancy just dancing around for a decent workout.
TAKING YOUR WORKOUT WITH YOU
The best thing about a workout DVD is that you can do them anywhere. They are portable so you can take them on holiday and do them in your hotel room etc. All you really need is a DVD player and some motivation and you are good to go for an awesome workout. On some occasions, you may need extra equipment like a chair or weights and I always make sure I check this before purchasing, however, you can always improvise.
TIME AND AVAILABILITY
Another thing to consider is how much time do you have to actually workout. Some workout DVDs are designed especially people who can’t find the time to exercise. They have sections of various time frames from 10-30 minutes constructed of different exercises aiming to give you the best workout in whatever time you have.
BEING IN CONTROL OF THE COST AND THE DIFFICULTY
You don’t need to be a gym member or a fitness instructor to get a good workout. DVDs are a cost-effective way (depending on how much you want to spend) to stay fit and healthy. Also, you are in control of the quality of the workout too. If I find that a section is too hard I either try it out at a lower intensity or fast forward to the next section until I feel strong enough to tackle it.
READ THE REVIEWS
Reviews are also a great indicator of how good a workout DVD is. The yoga DVDs that I purchased a few months ago have brilliant reviews. Word of mouth is a wondrous thing, my friends!
So there you go, these are the main considerations that I take into account when choosing a fitness DVD. Of course, you are going to get some homework DVDs that really aren’t going to fulfill your needs or challenge you enough, but I’ve found that using these simple tips saves me a lot of time and money and I hope they do the same for you too.
