Last year, , the Danish art of living well was on the tip of everyone’s lips. However, this year there is a new Scandinavian lifestyle phenomenon, that everyone is going crazy over, Lagom (pronounced lah-gom) the Swedish concept of balanced living.

Lagom, roughly translated into English means ‘not too little, not too much, just right” – just enough, no excess or overwhelm. I’ve read up a lot about lagom recently and really recommend ‘Lagom, The Swedish Art of Balanced Living by Linnea Dunne‘ if you’re looking for more in-depth knowledge on this Swedish wellness trend.

Similar to how I try to live my own life, I really love the idea of moderation and have taken some aspects of lagom on board. It’s universal and applies to every area of your life, which makes it easy to become a daily practice.   It represents balance, sustainability, and that middle ground suggesting that what is just right is what brings happiness and makes us feel good.

Although we are way into summer now, it’s not over yet and here are some lagom activities and ideas to help you feel more balanced this summer.

Liberate your house of the unnecessary

One simple way to practice lagom is to that you don’t need.  Too many possessions can have a negative effect and create a sense of overwhelm and stress.  Maybe first, start with your wardrobe, if you haven’t worn it in a year, it’s time to donate it to charity.  Then move on to your home, it doesn’t have to be a massive clear out, just purge your home of the unwanted possessions to create more space and flow.

Get your Fika on

Fika is a Swedish concept that is a massive part of lagom, all about enjoying something sweet while spending time with your loved ones.  This is something that I can definitely get on board with! It can be as simple as coffee and a cinnamon bun or even more special like afternoon tea.

Did you know that it’s Afternoon Tea Week?  What a perfect excuse to gather your friends and catch up over tea, sandwiches, and cakes and put your fika skills into practice.  I love afternoon tea and it always feels like a treat because it’s not an everyday occasion.  I’m definitely overdue booking in for one, which is something that I need to change asap.

are running a ‘’ campaign running at the moment to convince Unicode to create a tea emoji, which I think is a great idea. There’s a coffee emoji, burger emoji and even a salad emoji. They finally got on board with an avocado emoji after their rise in popularity. I think a tea emoji to celebrate this British tradition is also warranted.   I can never start my day without a cup of tea, it’s such a big part of my routine.  It’s a great way to start the day, catch up with friends over, a hug in a cup when needed.

Try something new, but make sure it’s outdoors

Getting in touch with nature and spending time outdoors in one of my favourite things about the summer. It’s a great way to try something new, soak up some vitamin C, perhaps find a new hobby or spend some time together with friends and family. Things like foraging, camping, hiking, swimming in open water are all great ways to stretch your boundaries and spend time outdoors too.

Find some space for “me” time

The summer holidays may be all about the kids and keeping them entertained, but you need to make some time for yourself too. It may be a struggle with a jam-packed summer schedule, but how about reducing your time on social media to turn your screen time into me time.  You could use this new free time to read, journal or get creative – go wild!

Embrace Your Inner Eco-Warrior

Lagom makes you a more conscious consumer and helps you to reduce your environmental impact. It’s about being more aware of how you’re spending your money and shifting your mindset to being kinder to the planet by making small changes. Getting into recycling can have a massive impact on the environment, collectively working towards a positive change. Additionally, addressing your spending habits may make you change to a ‘do I really need it’ mentality, which in turn saves you money and can help the environment too.

Lagom truly is the art of balance, which is obviously a topic that is close to my heart. I love the simplicity of the concept and how easily it can be introduced into everyday life without any drama or upset.  It’s a positive transformation towards moderation and finding happiness in the sufficient for a more balanced life.

Have you heard of lagom?  What is your best afternoon tea/fika experience?
